If you're thinking about CO2 laser resurfacing, you've probably got one big question: how long will my face look like I just had a laser treatment?

The honest answer is that it depends on how deep the treatment goes. A light pass might leave you pink for a day or two. A deeper treatment aimed at wrinkles or acne scars means more visible healing. Here's what the first two weeks usually look like, so you can plan your calendar with realistic expectations.

Why recovery isn't the same for everyone

CO2 lasers are ablative, which means they remove tiny amounts of the skin's surface to trigger healing and new collagen. Most modern CO2 treatments are fractional. The laser treats microscopic columns of skin and leaves the skin between them intact, and that untouched skin helps you heal faster than older full surface resurfacing did.

At Sanctuary, we use a hybrid system that pairs CO2 with a 1570nm wavelength. The CO2 works on the upper layers of skin. The 1570nm wavelength works deeper to support new collagen growth. Because the settings can be adjusted, your treatment can be gentle or aggressive, and your recovery follows the same scale.

Other things that shape your timeline include the area treated, your skin type, and how closely you follow your aftercare.

Day of treatment

Right after your session, your skin will feel warm and tight, and it'll look red. Some swelling is normal, especially around the eyes. After a lighter treatment, this may be most of what you notice. Plan on a quiet evening at home either way.

Days 1 to 3: redness and swelling peak

For moderate and deeper treatments, redness and swelling are usually at their strongest in the first few days. Your skin may feel like it has a sunburn. Sleeping with your head slightly raised and using cool compresses can help with swelling.

This is usually the stretch people choose to stay home for.

Days 3 to 7: crusting and peeling

As the treated skin renews itself, it starts to darken slightly, flake, and peel. This is the old damaged skin making way for new skin underneath. It can look worse before it looks better, and that's expected.

Don't pick or peel the flakes. Pulling skin off before it's ready raises the risk of scarring and discoloration. Let it shed on its own.

Days 7 to 10: fresh skin shows through

For most fractional CO2 treatments, visible peeling wraps up somewhere between about day 5 and day 10. The new skin underneath will look pink, smooth, and a bit sensitive. Many people feel ready to be seen in public again during this window, though deeper treatments can take longer.

Days 10 to 14: back to normal life

By the end of the second week, most people are back to their regular routines. Some pinkness often hangs around, and it can take several more weeks to fully fade. Your skin will also be more sensitive to the sun than usual, so daily sunscreen matters more now than ever.

When you'll see results

Your skin will look smoother and brighter once peeling finishes. But the real payoff comes later. Collagen keeps rebuilding for several months after treatment, so improvements in fine lines, texture, and scarring keep developing well after your skin looks healed.

Some patients get one deeper treatment. Others prefer a series of lighter sessions with shorter recovery each time. The right approach depends on your goals and how much downtime you can take.

What can make recovery harder

A few things are worth raising at your consultation:

  • Cold sores. Laser resurfacing can trigger an outbreak if you've had them before, so tell your provider about any history.
  • Skin tone. Darker skin tones have a higher risk of temporary dark spots after CO2 treatment. This usually calls for more conservative settings and careful aftercare.
  • Sun exposure. Fresh skin burns easily. Protect it.
  • Skipping aftercare. Follow the cleansing and moisturizing plan your provider gives you, and don't start active skincare products until you're cleared to.

Plan your recovery before you book

The easiest recovery is a planned one. If you've got an event coming up, schedule your treatment with at least two weeks of breathing room. For deeper treatments, give yourself more.
